ARCH GALLERY has been invited to participate in the "Memory, Inheritance, Mutation – China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Art Biennale" in Macao. Works by artists Mingjun Luo, Haiqiang Guo, and Mutian Chen have been on display at the Macao Museum of Art since October 25, and the biennale is part of the 6th "Meet Macao – China-Portugal Cultural Arts Festival".
The "China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Art Annual" is an artistic exchange platform that transcends language and culture, bringing together contemporary artworks from Mainland China, Macao, and Portuguese-speaking countries to explore the vision of mutual prosperity and integration amid diverse cultural collisions. This year's annual exhibition, themed "Memory · Heredity · Mutation," delves into how memory leaves traces in the encoding of cultural heredity and evolves or mutates in a constantly changing world. Through their unique perspectives and creative approaches, artists transform personal and collective cultural trajectories into thought-provoking artworks, showcasing the aesthetics of cultural value and variation while foreshadowing the future, guiding audiences to reflect on the continuity and diversity of culture.
"Memory" is not only the sum of individual or collective experiences but also a carrier of cultural heredity, forming the foundation of our understanding of ourselves and the world. "Heredity" is an extension of memory, referring not only to the biological transmission of genes but also to the inheritance of intangible heritage such as culture, art, and language. Much like DNA, it constitutes the unique identity of nations and countries. "Mutation" is the prerequisite for innovation and an inevitable outcome of biological evolution, enabling adaptation to a rapidly changing environment. Simultaneously, it fosters diversity among individuals and societies, driving the continuous progress of the species as a whole. "Memory · Heredity · Mutation" forms a bridge connecting the past, present, and future. Through creative variations, artists facilitate the fusion of Eastern, Western, and even Global Southern elements, generating entirely new artistic contexts.
The exhibition employs a rich array of visual art forms, ranging from two-dimensional photography and painting to multi-layered mixed-media collages, three-dimensional installations, and even immersive virtual reality. Featuring over a hundred creations from more than 20 artists across Mainland China, Macao, and nine Portuguese-speaking countries, the works navigate the themes of "Memory · Heredity · Mutation" in ways that are both indirect and direct, subtle and explicit.
